The axis stretches toward recent years, where most milestones fall. Bars count milestones per year; dots are single milestones.

Before 1990

17 milestones

  1. 1947 Sep 9

The Harvard Mark II logbook records a moth

Operators found a moth in a relay of the Harvard Mark II and taped it into the logbook with the note "First actual case of bug being found." The incident popularized "bug" and "debug" as the vocabulary for this kind of work.

  2. 1974 Dec

  4. 1980

Pac-Man ships ghost chase and scatter modes

Each ghost ran mutually exclusive modes such as chase, scatter, and frightened, with chase versus scatter mainly changing the target tile. It remains a fully documented early FSM-style NPC design.

  5. 1980

Pac-Man ships with scatter/chase ghost state machine

Each ghost's behavior was governed by a small number of mutually exclusive modes — chase, scatter, and frightened — with the only real difference between chase and scatter being the ghost's target tile. It is one of the earliest widely documented examples of state-machine-driven NPC behavior in a shipped game.

  9. 1982 Jun

gprof introduces the call graph profile

Susan L. Graham, Peter B. Kessler and Marshall K. McKusick present gprof at the SIGPLAN '82 Symposium on Compiler Construction. It extends the existing UNIX profiler by gathering arcs of a program's call graph, so the running time of a called routine is attributed to the routines that called it. The GNU implementation combines an `mcount` call compiled into every function entry with program-counter sampling around 100 times per second, and reports both a flat profile and a call graph — the self-versus-total distinction every profiler has carried since.
