Problem Management

An incident is a service disruption that needs attention now. A problem is an actual or potential cause of one or more incidents. Problem management gives you a disciplined way to investigate that cause and reduce future harm.

The practice is not a slower form of incident response. Incident management restores useful service as quickly as the situation requires. Problem management asks why the disruption became possible, how it might happen again, and which controls should change.

That separation protects both goals. Responders can use a safe workaround without waiting for a complete investigation. Investigators can then examine evidence without prolonging the live incident.

The outcome you want

Problem management reduces the likelihood and impact of incidents. You do that by identifying actual and potential causes, managing workarounds, and managing known errors.

A workaround reduces impact when a full resolution is not available. It buys operating room, but it does not prove that the underlying risk is gone. Document the conditions, steps, limits, and rollback path so responders can use it safely.

A known error is an analyzed problem that remains unresolved. Recording it makes current knowledge reusable. Support teams can recognize matching symptoms, apply the documented workaround, and link new incidents to the existing investigation.
