Don't Panic — Technology Risk Management
Technology risk management makes uncertainty visible before it turns into an expensive surprise with a calendar invitation attached. It exists because technology work joins outcomes, time, money, people, suppliers, and operations, while facts have the irritating habit of arriving after a commitment.
Start with the outcome. Name the change that matters and the evidence that would show it happened. Then keep the plan, forecast, and decision in separate drawers. A plan is intended work. A forecast is the current expectation. A decision changes authority, direction, or commitment. Putting all three in one sentence is how a meeting becomes a weather report.
The working method is a loop: set context, identify uncertainty, assess it, prioritize it, respond, monitor, report, and learn. The important part is linking an uncertain event to an effect on the outcome, an owner, an action, and a review date. A risk register is useful only when it helps that chain survive contact with the next decision.
The surprise is that a control does not mean certainty. An action can be complete while the exposure remains. A score can change because the evidence changed, not because the system became safer. Keep the evidence date and test whether the response changed the residual risk. Otherwise the record gets tidier while reality carries on with its own filing system.
When a decision is needed, make the update decision-ready: current state, evidence, variance, uncertainty, options, tradeoffs, recommendation, owner, and deadline. The Intro explains the working method and terms. Slides show the control loop. The Cheatsheet keeps the distinctions and quality gate close. Field Notes covers the operational traps that make a register look active without making risk smaller. The Quiz checks whether the concepts have stayed in the correct drawers. That is enough structure to make uncertainty discussable, which is rather better than discovering it in production.
