Hardware troubleshooting is the process of turning a computer symptom into evidence, isolating the failing layer or component, and confirming a repair. It combines startup-stage checks, built-in diagnostics, operating-system records, controlled tests, and safe component substitution.

Hardware Troubleshooting
Hardware troubleshooting is a controlled investigation of a computer that does not start, does not detect a component, behaves incorrectly, or fails under load. The visible symptom is the starting point, not the diagnosis. A blank display can come from the display path, memory, power delivery, firmware initialization, or the computer itself. The technician narrows that set by collecting evidence and changing one condition at a time.
The central rule is isolation. First locate the failure in the computer's startup or operating path. Then separate hardware from firmware, drivers, and other software. Finally, reduce the suspected hardware set until a targeted test, a known-good substitution, or a repeatable repair confirms the cause.
The operating path
A useful diagnostic map follows the order in which a computer becomes usable:
- Power delivery supplies standby and operating power to the system.
- Firmware initialization starts the processor, memory, and essential devices and performs the power-on self-test (POST).
- Device discovery makes storage, display, input, and expansion devices visible to firmware.
- Boot handoff loads an operating-system boot loader from a selected device.
- Driver binding lets the operating system control each discovered device.
- Runtime operation exposes temperature, load, intermittent connections, and degrading components.
The earliest failed stage determines which evidence is available. A system with no power indicators cannot provide an operating-system log. A system that reaches firmware diagnostics can test hardware without depending on the installed operating system. A system that boots can add Device Manager status, hardware-error records, storage health data, and sensor trends to the investigation.
