Hardware troubleshooting is the process of turning a computer symptom into evidence, isolating the failing layer or component, and confirming a repair. It combines startup-stage checks, built-in diagnostics, operating-system records, controlled tests, and safe component substitution.

Don't Panic: Hardware Troubleshooting
Hardware troubleshooting turns a symptom into evidence, isolates the failing layer or component, and confirms that the repair removed the original failure. The symptom is not the diagnosis. A blank display can be a monitor, cable, adapter, graphics path, memory, firmware startup, or power problem. Hardware enjoys this sort of ambiguity more than technicians do.
Trace the machine in operating order. Power comes first. Firmware initializes essential devices and runs startup checks. Storage and devices are discovered. A boot loader hands off to the operating system. Drivers bind to devices. Runtime load exposes heat, loose connections, weak storage, and parts that only fail after being annoyed for a while.
Each stage offers different evidence. A dead machine cannot give you operating-system logs. Firmware diagnostics can test hardware without the installed OS. A booted system can add device status, hardware-error records, storage health, and sensor trends. Every observation has a boundary. A power light proves some power path exists, not that every voltage is correct.
Change one thing at a time. A discriminating test separates competing causes: swap a known-good cable while keeping the display and source fixed, then restore baseline before testing the next part. Replacing three things at once may fix the machine and destroy the explanation, which is how drawers fill with suspicious cables.
Protect data and people first. Copy important data before stressing a suspect drive. Follow the service manual. Disconnect power before opening equipment. Escalate swollen batteries, liquid damage, mains wiring, power-supply internals, soldered assemblies, and warranty-controlled repairs.
