Windows Performance Analysis
Windows performance analysis turns an observed delay into a timeline of work. The central toolset is the Windows Performance Toolkit, part of the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit. Windows Performance Recorder, or WPR, captures Event Tracing for Windows data. Windows Performance Analyzer, or WPA, opens the recording and presents graphs and tables for analysis. Xperf remains supported as a command-line tool, while recordings are analyzed in WPA.
Start with the scenario, not the tool. Define what is slow, how it is triggered, which user-visible result matters, and how often it reproduces. A system that is slow at logon needs a different recording window from a process that pauses during a file operation. Record only the period that contains the behavior. A trace with unrelated startup, background, and interactive activity is harder to explain.
