Don't Panic — UX Research
UX research is the disciplined habit of replacing product guesses with evidence about people, their context, and their behavior. It is not a ceremony for asking users to approve a design. People are exceptionally good at describing what happened, and much less reliable when asked to predict what a future interface will do. The distinction saves a surprising amount of expensive optimism.
The useful shape is an evidence path: decision, question, method, participants, session, analysis, action. Start with the decision that could change. Then ask a neutral question about the risky assumption beneath it. Choosing a method before that step is like bringing a microscope to a meeting because microscopes look suitably scientific. It may be impressive. It may also be looking at the wrong thing.
Methods are tools, not ranks. Interviews explore remembered experience and language. Usability testing observes an attempt at a realistic task. Analytics can show where behavior changes; an experiment can compare a defined change. Each produces a different kind of evidence. A survey cannot observe a task, and a few usability sessions cannot establish a population percentage, however much a slide deck would enjoy the number.
Participants are part of the instrument. Their role, recent behavior, device, environment, journey stage, and access needs define what the evidence can mean. A convenient colleague can help expose a broken prototype or an unclear task. They do not automatically stand in for the people affected by the decision. That is not snobbery; it is scope.
The surprise is that help changes the condition. If a facilitator points to the recovery menu and the participant completes the task, the result is assisted completion, not independent success. Keep observations separate from interpretations for the same reason. "Opened Help, returned, then contacted support" is a record. "The recovery route was not apparent" is a conclusion that must remain connected to the record.

It does not hand the product decision to participants, who have enough to do already.
