UX Research
UX research is the structured study of people who use, or may use, a product or service. It replaces assumptions with evidence about their goals, behavior, context, and difficulties so a team can make better design decisions.

Intro
UX research is the structured study of people’s goals, behavior, context, and experience with a product or service. A researcher turns a product decision into answerable research questions, selects methods that can produce relevant evidence, works with appropriate participants, and analyzes what happened. The output is not a verdict from “the user.” It is a bounded finding that connects observations to a decision.
The practice belongs inside human-centered design. That process starts with an explicit understanding of users, tasks, and environments. Design solutions are then evaluated and refined iteratively. Research supplies the evidence for that cycle, but it does not replace design, product strategy, analytics, accessibility evaluation, or engineering judgment.
The evidence path
A useful study follows a traceable path:
- Decision: State what the team must decide and what evidence could change that decision.
- Research question: Convert assumptions into neutral questions about behavior, needs, comprehension, or performance.
- Method: Choose a method whose data can answer each question.
- Participants: Recruit people whose experience and context match the population relevant to the decision.
- Session: Use realistic tasks or neutral prompts, then record behavior and statements without coaching the desired answer.
- Analysis: Separate raw observations from interpretations. Group related observations, test alternative explanations, and express findings at the strength the sample permits.
- Action: Connect each supported finding to a design change, a product choice, or another question.
Weakness at one link limits everything after it. A polished report cannot rescue leading questions, unsuitable participants, or a prototype that did not expose the behavior under study.
Four dimensions for choosing a method
Research methods answer different kinds of questions. Four dimensions help distinguish them.
Attitudinal methods capture what people say, believe, remember, or prefer. Interviews and surveys commonly produce attitudinal data. Behavioral methods capture what people do. Usability tests, field observation, analytics, and experiments are behavioral.
Qualitative methods explain patterns, mechanisms, and meanings through observations, words, and artifacts. They are useful for discovering problems and understanding why they occur. Quantitative methods estimate magnitude or compare conditions with numeric measures. Task success, time on task, satisfaction scores, survey proportions, and experiment outcomes are examples.
