Don't Panic: Playwright Fundamentals
Playwright Test runs checks in a real browser. It opens a page, performs an action, and asks whether the application showed the right result. That sounds like a person clicking around, except the person would have to repeat the same visit across browsers and then write down exactly where it went wrong.
The first useful idea is the browser context, an isolated browser profile for one test. Each test gets a fresh page inside one. Cookies from the previous test therefore stay in the previous test. The application's database, however, has not heard about this arrangement. Two tests using the same server account can still tread on each other's changes. The browser is tidy; the rest of the system may be less cooperative.
The second idea is the locator, a recipe for finding an element at the moment it is needed. A button's role and accessible name give the recipe meaning to both the test and a person using the interface. A chain of CSS classes can also find the button, until the layout changes and the test starts touring the wrong corner of the page.
Then there are two kinds of waiting. Playwright waits before an action until its target is ready to receive it. A web-first assertion waits afterward for an expected page state. The first wait means the click could happen. It does not mean the Save operation succeeded. That tiny gap is where many surprisingly cheerful false positives live.
The runner can repeat a test under several projects, named settings such as different browsers. It can run tests in parallel and collect an HTML report. If one fails, a trace records the sequence of actions and page evidence. Read the trace before prescribing a longer sleep. A passing retry means the failure was intermittent, which is a clue, not a pardon.
For the next step, the Intro explains the whole path from server to report. The Cheatsheet keeps locator and waiting decisions close at hand. Practice Reference gives a test and configuration you can adapt to a local app. The Exercise turns those pieces into a check with a visible success condition. Reference links lead to the exact behavior in the official docs when an edge case appears.
